The man suspected in a series of home invasions and sexual assaults near the University of South Florida is dead after a shootout with police.

A police chase ended Friday afternoon when the car Charlie Christopher Bates was driving went off the road in Tampa. Police then exchanged gunfire with Bates.

Once the shooting ended -- officers pulled him from the car and rushed him to the hospital where he died.

"He wanted very badly to hurt someone so he wasn't going to go any further than this."

No police officers were injured in the shootout. Bates was on the run after a series of home invasions near USF late Thursday night and early Friday morning.

Officials said Bates fired shots, raped four women, and forced around 20 people at a birthday party into a bedroom.
