Fla. remembers missing children today

Florida's annual "missing children's day" is being held at the state capitol today.

The event is held on the second Monday of September each year, to coincide with the day 9 year old Jimmy Ryce was raped and murdered.

A Florida law called the "Jimmy Ryce act" provides ways for sex offenders to be held indefinitely for mental health treatment. At today's event, dozens of parents of missing children will share their stories.

What I think this day does is give them a unique opportunity to interact together, they have a unique experience to share and this gives them an opportunity to get together and talk and maybe support each other.

We actually have a dinner for them the night before, so they have some privacy before the main event the next day."

Today's event also features activities for children to learn how to be safe if a stranger makes them uncomfortable.
