Baker Corn Maze opens
BAKER -- OKALOOSA COUNTY - It's eight feet tall, seven acres across, and it bears a striking resemblance to the F35 Joint Strike Fighter. The Baker Corn Maze opens this weekend.
Laura Hussey "After a while, it all starts to look alike....corn! Corn to the left, corn to the right, corn right in front of you, and no end in sight"
The view from above is clean, precise, and pretty darn cool. An F35, carved into Bill Barnhill's cornfield.
Bill Barnhill/Crestview Rotary Club "Corn was about this high when they got here this year. And they cut it in with a GPS"
The corn maze is a fundraiser for the Crestview Rotary Club. Last year, the maze was designed around their logo. Almost seven thousand people gave it a try.....some were in there a while.
Bill Barnhill "There's over eighteen thousand feet of path in there, most of which goes nowhere." Laura "You laugh when you say that" Bill "There's one way through. It'll take 'em a while, but they'll have a lot of fun doing it"
Rotary volunteers will man a first aid station halfway through, offering bottled water, maps, and a little help if needed.
Mike Carroll/Crestview Rotary Club "So if somebody wants to bow out halfway through, we won't tell anybody, but we'll certainly come rescue you"
The corn maze also offers a haunted hike called "Nightmare on the Old Spanish Trail", plus lots of family activities.
The F-35 theme is getting so much buzz that Air Force Times might come out....and the club is pondering what their next design will be.
Mike Carroll "I don't know how we're gonna beat it for next year. Maybe we'll do Channel 3 News, I don't know (laughs)"
Laura Hussey "If you find your way through the corn maze and make it through the scary haunted trail, there's still more fun to be had. Check this out....a corn cannon!"
