Health officials warn Floridians about flesh-eating bacteria
FLAGLER COUNTY (AP) -- Health officials in two Florida
counties are warning of a deadly bacteria in coastal waters.
Officials in Volusia and Flagler Counties warn that several people in recent days have been affected by the Vibrio vulnificus bacteria.
Individuals can contract the potentially deadly bacteria by eating raw seafood or by having an open wound that comes in contact with it.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that Vibrio vulnificus lives in warm seawater and requires sea salts to survive.
To date, 26 people in the state have reported being infected by the bacteria, according to the Volusia County Health Department.
