Santa Rosa Co pay raises approved

SANTA ROSA COUNTY   --  Santa Rosa County Commission agreed to pay raises for county employees, but not at the price of higher property taxes.

There was a packed house at the commission meeting as commissioners discussed the idea.

Many people support pay raises for county employees, including sheriff's deputies, but not all like the idea of paying more in property taxes to  make that happen.
The commission agreed to a 3 % pay raise for all county employees, which will add another 1.2 million dollars to the budget, but the money is coming out of county reserves.
One Navarre man spoke saying the pay raises are long overdue, especially for deputies.

Dominic Guadagnoli/Navarre Resident:  "They are well underpaid.  They put their lives on the line, you know that, without question.  We need to look at them and appreciate and make it right for who they are."
The pay raises go into effect October 1st.
Sheriff's office employees haven't had a raise since 2007.
It has been more than four years for other county employees.
