Pensacola Chamber to no longer promote tourism marketing
ESCAMBIA COUNTY -- It looks like the tourism marketing business will no longer be something the Greater Pensacola Chamber Of Commerce deals with.
They've been handling the task for 25 years using a portion of the county's bed tax receipts to do it.
But a group of hotel owners have been pushing for a change.
Yesterday, the chamber's executive committee gave their approval to the creation of an independent, nine member board to guide the county's marketing efforts.
The chamber will decide on two new appointments next week.
Former state lawmaker and Pensacola Mayor Jerry Maygarden is being recommended to lead the chamber as president and CEO indefinitely.
He's been the interim CEO since the contract of the former CEO was allowed to expire.
Also, Gary Huston could become the next chairman of the board.
"Overall there was a feeling in the community there should be a concentrated effort to manage tourism dollars, tax dollars that come from the county to help promote tourism."
The full chamber board still needs to approve the idea.
As does the county commission.
But both appear likely to do that.
