Town Hall: Florida Education Reform
Education is at a critical juncture across the country, and Jeb Bush knows it.
"That's the first step our standards too low too diluted. We need to organize in a radically different way to make sure kids do better at learning'
The former Florida governor now heads two foundations, The Foundation of Excellence in Education and Foundation for Florida's Future
A number of states have adopted measures he started years ago, including standardized tests, an a-F school grading system, charter school and vouchers.
Yet U.S. Students still lag their counterparts in many countries around the world.
"Outcomes is really what matters and all indicators about a quarter of our kids finish high school, college and or career ready"
Recently, Bush met privately with Governor Rick Scott, who had organized a three day summit..that reviewed the state's grading system and standards of all public schools.
Bush says Scott has done a good job with education, although he initially cut funding.
"Gov Scott was confronted with a very severe downturn in our economy'
"As the recovery has taken place. Hes been smart to advocate making public education a priority"
"I'm not a fan of Jeb Bush's ideas on education")
Debra Wilhelm is teachers union president, she says the aforementioned summit , was disappointing because Scott didn't attend and chose to discuss education reform privately with Bush, who she questions is qualified to make decisions about education.
"I think he would like to come across as the education guru I don't know where he gets his ideas from but I can tell you the educators living the results of his ideas is not the case he is not a guru"
"Does she have an education degree, I don't think so"
The Scott-Bush meeting comes at a critical juncture. Critics say the A-thru-F school grading model is flawed because of shifting standards year to year
"the bar raises, the bar lowers'
"This whole thing started in'99 when Bush took governor's seat"
"For us it's all about let the teachers teach'
The governor pledged to adopt some summit recommendations via executive order and assign others to the legislature for the 2014 session.
