Eight people in New Hampshire may have been exposed to deadly brain disease
NEW HAMPSHIRE -- Eight people in a New Hampshire hospital *may have contracted a rare, deadly brain disease.
Doctors say they were performing brain surgery on a man they did not know had a disease known as "CJD".
The equipment used *was sterilized -- but standard sterilization doesn't kill the disease.
So when doctors used the surgical instruments on other patients -- they could have been exposed.
"CJD" is similar to Mad Cow Disease -- impacting the nervous system and causing rapid brain deterioration.
There is no treatment or cure and usually kills within months.
"For these 8 people, they don't know if they were infected they don't know if they are a ticking time bomb..."
That the risk of contracting CJD for anyone undergoing surgery is *extremely rare.
It hasn't been transmitted through surgery in more than 35 years.
