Large amounts of cocaine washes up on Gulf Shores beaches twice
GULF SHORES -- Police are investigating after cocaine washes up on beaches in the Gulf Shores.
And this wasn't a small amount -- two kilos were found in two different locations.
Some beachgoers discovered it a few weeks ago.
Lead investigators tell me the last time something like this happened was at least 16 years ago.
We are talking about two kilos in two different locations. The first was found near the Gulf State Park Pavilion on September 16th.
By two couples walking the beach.
The second kilo was found near Fort Morgan this past weekend.
A lot of questions : Where did the cocaine come from? Police say DNA testing could provide some clues.
And the circumstances behind how it got into the gulf?
The may never know. I'm told the street value is at $60,0000.
One thing is certain police say, if you find anymore of this calling the police is the right thing to do.
"We would want them to do exactly what those couples did. Call it in. I mean it would be - you are looking at the difference between
just an interesting story to tell versus possibly a million dollar bond if you were to do something silly."
The DEA and the Department of Homeland Security will pick up the investigation from here.
