Many sports and energy drinks claim to give you a lift but they're also lifting something else- something that can't be replaced.

For the longest time we didn't see any decay, especially in adolescents and adults but for the past 4-5 years we're seeing it again. And I directly attribute it to these drinks.
He says it's erosion.
Basically the surface of the tooth- the enamel surface- wears off and it's the acidity and the sugar content of these drinks that slowly erodes the enamel away.
And once it's lost, it's lost.
How it happens is simple.
We're using eggs to represent the enamel on your teeth. Eggshells and teeth are made of a similar composition and both are susceptible to acidic substances. Ingredients commonly found in these types of drinks.
We're going to bathe each egg in a drink that people bathe their mouths in every day.
Seven popular drinks. Everything from soda pop to milk to energy drinks.
We let them soak overnight. The results.
It happens so slowly . It's a very gradual process. Usually it starts with little dark spots on the chewing surfaces of the teeth and slowly you start seeing
Craters- I call them little potholes- on the tooth. Little craters or dimples on the teeth that start to decay.
18 hours later we checked the results.
The egg in the water had no change.
The one that sat in the milk actually felt stronger.
We started to see changes on the egg in the green soda.
The one in the blue sports drink had a little more damage.
But the egg in the energy drink on the end had the most damage.
You can see the outer shell just starting to peel away.
But don't go running for the toothbrush just yet.
At least for an hour it's recommended that you not brush because the acidity is sort of flowing around the mouth and you can spread it easily and pass it from one tooth to the other tooth.

The doctor says if you do drink things other than water, use a straw. It helps keep the acid away from your teeth.
