Florida Senate to discuss lowering vehicle registration fees

Florida senators are considering lowering vehicle registration fees.

The Senate Transportation Committee will take up the proposal Wednesday. Senate Appropriations Chairman, Joe Negron, filed a bill that would roll back vehicle registration fees that were increased in 2009 to help close a state budget shortfall.

Negron says if the fees are lowered, it could save drivers more than $200 million. Earlier in 2013, Negron pursued a similar rollback bill, but the bill died, in part because it would have been funded by eliminating a tax break that benefits the insurance industry.

Negron is pushing for Governor Scott to include the fee reduction in cuts for the 2014 legislative session.
