YOUR THREE CENTS: Do you support or oppose an expansion of casino gambling in Florida?
The Florida Senate will host a series of four public hearings this fall to seek public input on the future of gaming in the state.
The hearings are tentatively scheduled to be held in Fort Lauderdale and Lakeland in late October and in Jacksonville and Pensacola in mid-November.
Lawmakers paid gaming industry analysts nearly $400,000 for a study on the economic impact the state could realize if casino gambling were expanded.
That report was delivered to lawmakers this week.
It concluded that a massive expansion of gambling could boost state coffers by $1 billion a year.
Previous estimates, released just last week, said the state would actually lose about 22-million a year if 33 casinos and six destination resorts were allowed to be developed.
The discrepancy has some lawmakers questioning the integrity of the 400-thousand dollar study.
That study also found that there would probably be only mild positive impacts on local and statewide employment and wages" because casinos would not represent a large expansion of their local economies.
