Navy Ammo ship docks at Pensacola during final voyage
NAS PENSACOLA -- A U.S. Navy ammunition ship is docked at NAS Pensacola on its final voyage.
The USNS Flint was built at the Ingalls Shipyard in Pascagoula in 1970.
It delivered ammunition to ships at sea and in port during the Vietnam War, the Persian Gulf War, and the recent wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.
Captain Jonathan Olmsted is taking the ship to Charleston, South Carolina, to be dismantled.
He first served on the ship as a cargo officer from 1999 to 2003.
Capt Jonathan Olmsted:
"I guess you could say it's bittersweet. This ship means a lot to me
I was happy to be reassigned here - just recently, I've been on board about 3 months - as her final Master."
The ship is scheduled to leave Pensacola tomorrow afternoon.
