Miami loses 9 scholarships over 3 years

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) -- A person familiar with the situation tells The Associated Press that Miami will lose nine football scholarships over three years as part of the penalties in the Nevin Shapiro booster scandal. The Hurricanes also will be able to go to a bowl this season.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the NCAA report was not being publicly released until 10 a.m. EDT. WQAM, the school's athletic flagship radio station, first reported the scholarship losses.

The NCAA's decision comes 2 1/2 years after the association's investigation of Miami began. It also comes eight months after it said the Hurricanes did not "exercise institutional control" over Shapiro's interactions with the school's football and men's basketball teams. Shapiro is a former booster and convicted felon.
