Latest on FL inmate search
ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) -- A big question in Florida today is who created the fake but legit-looking release documents that allowed two lifers to walk out of prison.
The other question is the whereabouts of the killers. Officials are still looking for Joseph Jenkins and Charles Walker.
The legitimate-looking documents exposed gaps in Florida's judicial system.
Within days of walking out of prison, Joseph Jenkins and Charles Walker, who had been sentenced to life, traveled about 300 miles to a jail an Orlando and registered as felons, as required for released inmates. Officials say that would draw less attention than two escaped inmates with active warrants.
Had one of murder victim's family not contacted prosecutors, authorities might not have even known about the mistaken releases.
Authorities are trying to figure out how that could have happened and how to stop it from happening again.
