Lawmakers take first step in lowering vehicle registration fees

FLORIDA   --  State lawmakers took the first step this week to lower what you pay to register your car or truck.

Tag fees were raised in 2009 to combat falling state revenues.
Senate Appropriations Chairman Joe Negron, filed a bill that would roll back the fees by twelve dollars a vehicle.

That's only half of the 2009 increase.
The cost to the state: 240 million dollars.
"It's important that as our budget picture improves, that we look at some of the increases that were done during the tough times. Because government has a habit of charging more during difficult times and then never going back and undoing some of those increases."

Negron is pushing for Governor Scott to include the fee reduction in cuts for the 2014 legislative session.

If it happens at all, motorists would see lower tag fees in July.
