People Magazine Teacher of the Year selects local teacher
ESCAMBIA COUNTY -- A local teacher receives a big award!!! He's one of five teachers in the country to be named People Magazines Teachers of the Year.
If you looked through the most recent issue of People Magazine you may have seen a familiar face from a familiar school. A teacher from Oakcrest is one of the Teachers of the Year.

John Herber tries to make every class fun and that's one of the reason's People Magazine chose him as Teacher of the Year. He's modest and blushes a bit when it's even mentioned saying his pride comes from seeing his students learn.

And boy has this method worked when he first started teaching 5th grade five years ago, the proficiency rate at Oakcrest was only 16%. Last year, it was 66%

His lessons go beyond the classroom. He's created Butterfly and Community Gardens at the school
Teaching science and leadership at the same time once the 5th graders learn about the gardens, they give tours and teach the younger students...
When they can teach their peers, builds self esteem, shows they know the material, great watching them grow in that area
He's really fun, he does lots of cool experiments, and he did all this!!
There's no more deserving person, he's patient with the kids, they actually do science,
Herber also stays late twice a week holding homework club and volunteer coaches flag football and basketball. People Magazine awards 4000 dollars to the school and gives $1000 bucks to the winner. After meeting Mr. Herber, it won't surprise where that money is going...
It will end up back in the classroom, this is where it belongs...
A celebration will be held for him here at Oakcrest Elementary on Oct 28th at 1 pm..
