Fort Walton Beach man facing charges for shooting Black Bear and cub

FORT WALTON BEACH  -  An 82-year-old Fort Walton Beach man is now facing charges for killing a black bear and her cub last month.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission says Richard Ward shot the bears in his backyard on East Ponderosa Road in Okaloosa County on October 18th.
He told investigators he heard his dog yelping and believed it was being attacked.

He killed a female bear and her cub with his twelve-gauge shotgun.

Black bears are no longer listed as endangered, so he is only charged with a misdemeanors.
