TRACKING THE TROPICS

On the map below, the circle over the Gulf of Mexico is for an area of low pressure heading toward Texas.  Development is not expected.  Also, we're tracking Cristobal and a tropical wave over the Atlantic Ocean that may become another depression though chances are low.

No "layoffs" at Navy Federal Credit Union

Navy Federal Credit Union employs 3,200 people at its Heritage Oaks campus in Beulah and at its branches throughout the Pensacola area. Earlier this year, the company bought additional property in Beulah and announced plans to hire thousands more workers over the next several years.

In recent weeks, several people contacted Channel 3 News expressing concern about "layoffs" at Navy Federal. They cited hearing about anywhere from 30 to 300 people losing their jobs.

We asked Jeanette Mack, manager of corporate communications at Navy Federal, about it. She told us that Navy Federal has never done any "layoffs" in Pensacola. They do, however, occasionally use temporary workers, contracted through Aerotek Staffing, and the contracts for a small number of workers ended in October.

Temporary workers are contracted for a specific period of time to complete short-term projects. The contracts may be extended if the project takes longer than expected. Mack says the use of contract workers is standard for the industry.

The temporary workers may apply with Navy Federal directly for any open permanent positions.

We did not speak with Aerotek Staffing about their policies.
