Local oysters help improve our waters

Oysters shucked at local restaurants are helping improve local waters.
Volunteers used over 136-tons of recycled oysters to build 40 reefs in Bayou Texar.

Today was the last phase of the project, put on by "Keep Pensacola Beautiful" and Florida Department of Environmental Protection.

Volunteers moved 24,000 pounds of oysters for the last six reefs.
They say the new reefs will help improve the quality of the water.

"Putting in the reefs slow down some of the sediment transport that goes through out the water. It helps stabilize the shore and allows new growth of vegetation."

Gulf Power helped fund the project.
