Obama Administration boost mental health care

The Obama administration is working to boost mental health treatment.
President George W. Bush signed a law in 2008 aimed at doing just that, but it has not been widely enforced.

Today Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius announced new rules to beef up that law.

"We've issued the final parity rule, which finally puts mental health services and substance abuse on equal footing with physical health services."

Under the new rules, insurance companies can no longer authorize only a two-day stay in the hospital for someone who has had a psychotic break... If it authorizes a 30-day stay for a stroke patient.

In addition, people with pre-existing mental conditions, such as depression, will no longer be denied insurance coverage.

The new rules apply only to private insurance.
