Smoking could be banned at public playgrounds

Florida law bans smoking in businesses, but in the open air of a park, it's still allowed for now.

The State Legislature is considering a bill that would pave the way for smoking to be banned at public playgrounds.

Many parks and playgrounds already have signs posted listing their rules but pretty soon 'no smoking' could be added to that list.

Senator Rob Bradley has proposed a new law that would ban smoking on public playgrounds

The proposal would allow cities and counties to restrict smoking on properties they owned.

Mr. Howard says, "It should already be law first of all and it's not good to smoke around anybody let alone the children."

Domonique Jordan says she loves to take her two kids to the playground. And when people come to the park and smoke it ruins their play time.
"I couldn't bring my babies out to a park and there be smoking."

She's not only concerned about her children dealing with second-hand smoke. She says sometimes smokers can leave a mess behind if they don't throw away their cigarette butts.
"I have a two year old and I don't want her picking anything up off the ground."

Other people say there shouldn't be a ban, people should be mindful if they choose to smoke.

"I've never had an encounter where someone is blowing smoke in my face literally so I think most people are aware and mindful of that and that's all I really ask for."

The law would only fine smokers if they refused to put out their cigarette or smoke in another area after they were asked to leave.

If this ban is put in place it would still come down to each city and county to place it on their list of ordinances.
