Okaloosa County honors veterans
OKALOOSA COUNTY -- In Okaloosa County, a ceremony at Beal Memorial Cemetery drew hundreds to pay respect to veterans.
The feeling of appreciation was powerful.
Rob Brown "For minutes on end, dozens and dozens of members of the community came forward to place red, white, and blue flowers on a wreath dedicated to our veterans. They had one overwhelming message: thank you."
Jack Bonham Sons of the American Revolution "Thank you. That would be the best thing, is thank you."
Jack Bonham proudly wears the uniform of a Revolutionary Soldier. To him it's a way to show gratitude to veterans from all American conflicts.
"Yes it is, and we should honor that. Roll out the red carpet, say thank you. Slap them on the back. But not too hard."
Lenny Cooley, a retired Air Force veteran, is remembering his brothers in arms, lost in combat.
"Well, I've been to quite a few of them, and it kinda hits you, you know? Just thinking about some of my comrades that aren't here now, you know."
Military rituals performed in respect for those who have been lost bring up many emotions for Cooley.
"It kind of makes your heart pump real fast, you know? It puts a lump in your throat and that sort of thing. It's nice."
In a crowd adorned in the colors of the nation, feelings of gratitude and appreciation are unmistakable. Susan Reed is the wife of a 100% disabled veteran.
"Thank you so very much. We're so very honored for what you do. We're very proud of you. And I hope we show that appreciation to them."
Rob Brown "Every one of these flags tells the story of a hero, and today, the community told those heroes thank you.
