Craft beer trending in Alabama

Craft beers are a growing business in Alabama.

In 2009, the state's small breweries cooked up about a thousand barrels of beer. This year the output is close to 40,000 barrels. Twenty breweries and brew pubs are now operating in Alabama, including one in Fairhope.
Brewers say it's because changes to the laws have opened up more opportunities.

"It's not just a local Alabama or a local phenomenon, it's happening all over the country," said Michael Seller, owner of Good People Brewing Co.

"Sales for all craft beer is growing at a double-digit rate. So there's plenty of room for lots more craft breweries to come online," said Steve Farace, marketing director of Sweetwater Brewery.

A law that took effect this year also allows hobbyists to make their own beer at home.
