Deep discounts for after-Christmas shopping


The deals for after-Christmas shopping are already popping up in stores.

Alison Kosik has more on what to buy and when as some stores are planning to open as early as 5 this morning.

You've been shopping for everyone else to make their Christmas dreams come true.

Now it's time to get a little selfish-- and shop for yourself as the discounts get even deeper.

The best after Christmas sales are clothes.

The web site "deal news" says expect huge markdowns from Banana Republic, Club Monaco, Gap, and French Connection. Last year Gap and French Connection shocked retail experts with extra discounts of 30 perecent to 50 percent off on top of sales of up to 75 percent off.

New Years Day is the best time to buy furniture, says Britt Beemer of America's Research Group.

It's become a tradition for people to shop for furniture that day. New furniture lines come out in February, so there is old product to move.

It's also the second or third biggest day of the year for mattress sales. Mattress companies have caught on to the furniture trend and have successfully piggy-backed with major sales.

Want a big screen tv? Wait a few more weeks-- think super bowl weekend. Beemer says it's the perfect storm. New models get announced at the consumer electronics show in January. The super bowl is in early February. Retailers are looking forward to moving out the old stuff.

How about a new car? December 31st is the day to buy.  Dealers and automakers want to meet year-end goals, experts say. Kelley Blue book says consumers will get the best possible deal on a new car on the last day of the year -- and maybe until January 2nd at some dealerships.
