Vandals continue to destroy local Christmas decorations
Neighbors in one Pensacola community say vandals are tearing down their Christmas decorations with a vengeance.
People who live along McChlellan Road say the vandals keep coming back year after year. Channel Three's Jenise Fernandez spoke with one man who's fed up, but won't give up.
John Van Matre came home Monday morning to find his decorations torn down. Christmas trees and reindeer on the ground and inflatable decorations unplugged.
"Just about every reindeer, anything that can be knocked over was either knocked over or laid over."
Van Matre says vandals come to his home every year messing with his decorations. This year wasn't as bad as year's past about three years ago, someone punched holes in the inflatables, stole lights, and put the reindeer in inappropriate positions. It was enough to make Van Matre not want to put up Christmas lights anymore but it's something he enjoys to do and the neighborhood looks forward to it every year.
"The people that stop by and talk about the joy you feel you're spreading. They all look forward to it."
"I love how the little kids, we love your lights."
Van Matre and his daughter Ashley started fixing the displays making sure everything was back in its original place. Ashley helps her dad put the lights up. It takes days and a lot of hours to make her home light up like this. She's disappointed people keep vandalizing her family's Christmas display.
"It makes me feel like we do all this work. They don't like it anymore."
Van Matre says he has not file a police report this time, because nothing was stolen. He hopes whoever is responsible will stop.
