Calorie counts now posted for vending machine snacks


Your New Year's resolution probably includes eating healthier. But what about those quick snack breaks at work when your only option is hitting the vending machine?

ABC's Reena Ninan has more on how new regulations can help you out.

Problems with healthcare.gov set our coffers back by over $400 million. But now there is a new charge about to drop. According to an FDA estimate $25.8 million dollars could soon be spent to
encourage americans to make healtheir choices at the vending machine.

Vending machines are often a last resort for people.  So if you are trying to eat healthy you cant even read the labels of what is trapped behind the glass. To help curb obesity-related costs, owners of an estimated 5.4 million snack and soda machines will now be required to post calorie counts on all their products.

How bad can it be?  We grabbed our smoothest dollar bills to check it out. Buffalo Wing Pretzels are 280 calories. But would you punch the same numbers if you knew these numbers? Not all candy is created equal. Pretzel M&Ms are 150 calories, 3 Muskateers are 240 and snickers are 250 calories.

Many chains have already started posting calories next to their menu items. In NYC it is a requirement.

 In New York they found out that people were choosing 100 fewer calories when they knew the calorie count.  Over the course of the year every day that adds up to 10 pounds.
