SCAM ALERT: Jury Duty scheme in Northwest Florida

NORTHWEST FLORIDA  --  People who think they missed jury duty after a summon are the latest victims of a scam.

This new scheme has made it's way to Northwest Florida.

You  might receive one of these in the mail and then have to appear for jury duty but what happens if you don't get one of these notices and then you get a phone call saying you owe a fine. It's all part of the scam.

In one scam, victims are contacted by phone and told they must pay a fine for missing jury duty. You should know that is not the court systems protocol. A person can be asked to explain why they missed jury duty and can even be held in contempt of court, but that is only done in open court by a judge. Sometimes callers pose as court personnel and demand payment of a fine for missing jury duty using a prepaid credit card. In other cases, the victim is sent a fake arrest warrant and told to pay a fine to resolve it.

Danielle Rudd- Better Business Bureau
"For Escambia and Santa Rosa Counties all citizens will receive a written letter in the mail that is related to jury duty. You will never be contacted by phone."

Danielle Rudd- Better Business Bureau
"If you do receive a phone call just hang up and report it to local police."

One way you can tell whether the call you are receiving is a scam is that the caller is human. Should the court systems contact you they only use automated voice recordings.
