Today friends and family will say good-bye to a local hero who was killed overseas during deployment.

Sergeant First Class William "Kelly" Lacey grew up in Okaloosa County and was the first American killed this year in Afghanistan. Lacey died on January 4th when his unit was attacked with rocket propelled grenades. In Afghanistan, Lacey was serving as a vehicle mechanic with the first infantry division out of Fort Knox.

He was on his fifth combat deployment, just ten days away from coming home. Visitation will be at 11 a.m. today at Whitehurst-Powell Funeral Home in Crestview and the service will follow at 1 p.m.

Burial will take place at Magnolia Cemetery in Laurel Hill. Lacey was awarded the Purple Heart Medal after his death.
