Escambia Co. Administrator Touart passed away from cancer
Friday morning, interim Escambia County Administrator George Touart passed away after a long battle with cancer.
He became the County Administrator in Escambia County in 2002, after holding the same position in two Mississippi Counties.
He left the position in 2007, when his ties to people involved in a County land deal raised suspicions, although no wrong-doing was ever found.
Despite parting on relatively bad terms, he was re-hired on an interim basis in 2012, when another administrator was fired.
Touart's tenure over the years was marked by many accomplishments including guiding the County through clean-up and rebuilding afer hurricane Ivan and helping create a permanent source of funding for the County's bus system.
Touart announced his retirement on the day after Christmas.
It was supposed to become effective on February 3rd.
