Winter Storm and driving in other southern states

ABC   --  The storm is causing an Arctic crisis for some cities.
Drivers in Birmingham and Atlanta are stranded.
ABC's Matt Gutman has more on how these southern cities are dealing with northern like snow.

It was a drive home few in the south will soon forget
An ice and snow storm gripping the region overnight and putting their commute home in a deep freeze..

In Atlanta nearly a thousand crashes due to icy roads, backed up traffic for miles

Many drivers just gave up trying abandoning their cars, instead.
The mayor says those empty cars are the main problem now..

Mayor Kasimreed :Our focus right now is to assist in any way with getting our freeways cleared.

Both the mayor and Georgia's governor are coming under heavy criticism for not being better prepared for the weather.

Gov deal :  We have always have emergency plans in place. Sometimes they're adequate, sometimes they are not.

Some still haven't made it home, while others were stuck for hours.
Gutman: How far you got in 8 hours? Man: A mile.

One woman even gave birth to a baby girl while stuck in the gridlock
Mom: We couldn't go forward I I just knew the baby was coming

But the pain was spread across the region in Birmingham, a jackknifed
Tractor-trailer shut down an interstate for 24 hours. Thousands of kids slept overnight in their schools because roads were impassible.. these lucky
 kids catching the last bus home

Little girl "I was super  scared if I don't get home to my parents I will freak out ."
