Sacred Heart Hospital adult beds, full to capacity
ESCAMBIA COUNTY -- All of Sacred Heart Hospital's adult beds are full to capacity.
That means adults needing immediate medical assistance are being taken to other area hospitals for treatment.
You won't see any ambulances dropping off adult patients at this trauma center, at least for the time being.
This is considered a very rare event at Sacred Heart where they're so full they can't accept anymore adult patients.
The hospital has seen an increase in patients over the last month.
While all 320 adult beds are full right now.
The E R, the Children's Hospital and Pregnant Women are still admitting patients.
People are coming in for a variety of illnesses including those with flu-like symptoms.
"If it was just the influenza I think we could manage our surge, but it's influenza, we've had significant trauma, we've also had significant cardiac patients, and the other thing we're seeing is general abdominal injuries"
Because Sacred Heart is full, adult trauma patients are being sent to Baptist Hospital and West Florida Hospital to handle the overflow.
Every hour doctors will be doing assessments to see how they can shuffle patients around and send patients home if they are ready, in order to make room and open up more adult beds.
We have placed calls with the other local hospitals to see where their capacity stands right now.
But we have not yet heard back.
