Florida Unemployment benefits restored
FLORIDA -- A measure to restore benefits to more than a million long-term unemployed Americans passed a first hurdle in the senate today.
The 60-37 vote indicates there's enough republican support to move the Emergency Unemployment Compensation forward to a full vote.
Some of the republicans who voted yes want the cost of the extension set off by cuts elsewhere in the budget.
Meanwhile, democrats say not restoring this emergency aid would ultimately hurt the economy.
"Americans use their unemployment benefits to buy food and fuel at local gas stations, to pay the landlord or to purchase a child a winter coat at a Local department store."
"Let's find a way to pay for these UI benefits so we're not adding to an already unsustainable debt."
If the measure passes the senate it still faces an uncertain future in the House.
