New playground coming to Community Maritime Park

DOWNTOWN PENSACOLA   --  A half-million dollar playground may be on the way to Community Maritime Park in Downtown Pensacola.
The Rotary Club has just been given the go-ahead to raise money for the project. The group plans to build the playground in the grassy area near the amphitheater, just southwest of Blue Wahoos stadium.

Right now there are just a few conceptual drawings available showing what the park could look like. And there's talk of installing a clock tower in the area - though the design for that is also still in the works.

Cassie Ringl, Mother: "Do you want to play at a park down here?"
Kids and moms who happened to be hanging out nearby said they're all for the project.

"That would be amazing. I'd be very excited about that."
Lacey Richards, Mother: "That would be awesome. We come here all the time, just riding bikes, kicking a ball around so it would be nice to have something like that."
The Downtown Pensacola Rotary Club is behind the kid-friendly project.
The group's incoming president says they hope to have it completed by the spring of 2015, when they'll commemorate their 100th anniversary.

John Shaffer, Incoming President, Rotary Club: "We thought what better way to celebrate it than to give a gift to the city of a playground, a handicapped-accessible playground that we can all enjoy right here in the downtown area."
The Rotary Club will pony up some of the money needed to build the park and raise the rest from other donors.

"It's safe feeling, just something about downtown, you can go eat and you can come down here and play."
Lacey Richards, Mother: "We love it."
