Endangered turtles return to the gulf today

GULF COAST   --  Some of our endangered sea turtles are back in the wild tonight.
About 50  turtles were rescued along the gulf coast during the extreme cold weather last week.

Seven were from Big Lagoon.
They have all been warming up at Gulf World in Panama City, and today  five of them were released in the waters near Fort Pickens.

Sadly two of the turtles did not survive.
Biologists say they don't see cold stunned turtles all that often, but with the forecast they were expecting it, and knew just where to look.

Very shallow, water  gets cold quicker, they can't handle it once it drops below 50 they float up, north wind pushes them up on the  beach and that's where we find them

They were all young, about half the size of a full grown turtle.
One of the turtles had actually been rescued before, and was tagged.

He had to have his flipper amputated several years ago after becoming entangled in fishing line.
