Local businesswoman hiking the Appalachian Trail
One local businesswoman is getting ready to tackle a long time item on her "Bucket List." Nancy Silivos is lacing up her hiking boots to hit the Appalachian Trail in early March.
Nancy Silivos is about to turn fifty-five.
"I've decided, it's time, I'm gonna put myself out there and believe in myself."
And her trailmate...Ryker. Together they're planning to hike 22-hundred miles in five and a half months.
"14 states, quite a journey."
That will raise money for United Cerebral Palsy...A cause she's been behind for decades.
"I can't imagine how hard it is for some of these parents whose children can't move on and they have to have continual care, they need support from these and them."
Appalachian hikers adopt a "trail name."
Nancy's is her late father's nick name, "Irdy".
"The older I get, the more I understand him. Although he's not with me, he'll be with me in spirit."
Technology will link Nancy to her husband and 3 grown kids.
"My children bought me a GPS spot which will send a beacon every hour as to where I am."
She's concerned about winter weather -- and admits to a few safety concerns.
"My son made me take a ji itsu class so if i have to wrestle a bear i can.
Her pack weighs 20 pounds...Tent and stove included...Ryker carries his own gear.
And is literally her security blanket.
"On one of our hikes, it was very cold and it was very nice to snuggle up to him."
A few folks will join the duo for a bit, but mostly they'll go it alone.
"I'm not going on a 22 hundred mile walk. I'm going on a hike and I'm gonna hike every day and it's one step at a time. I may be slow, but I'm gonna get there."
