Former Santa Rosa County resident pleads "no contest" to animal cruelty charges

SANTA ROSA COUNTY  --  The former owner of a Santa Rosa County home where six animals were found dead of starvation has pleaded no contest on charges of animal cruelty.

Toni Phelps abandoned her home on Winding Shore Drive in the spring of 2012 because of an impending foreclosure.

When she moved, she left three dogs and three cats locked inside the house.
In October of 2012 sheriff's deputies found the bodies of the animals throughout the home.
They say the animals ate items such as sofa cushions to try and survive.
Phelps will is scheduled for sentencing in April.
