CONSUMER ALERT: Valentine's Day scams

You  may be looking to steal your Valentine's heart but scammers are after your wallet.
Don't let the romance of Valentine's Day blind you -- scammers are out there specifically targeting us at this this holiday when they say we are thinking more with our hearts than our heads.

They may be charming but they are romance scams -- targeting us on our computers, for our money and in our online accounts.

AARP's blog put together some of the biggest scams making the rounds this Valentine's Day.
Be extra careful of scammers trolling online dating sites.  They may try to pull you into what's called a "long-con" scam -- which is usually part of an organized crime ring. The criminals create fake identities, lure you in, and then after a relationship is formed, then they ask you for a money transfer.

Lookout for eCards. Scammers send these cute electronic cards, then infect your computer with malware. They could gain remote access to your files and even your online accounts.

Sales. Look out for spam that is related to sales that are Valentine's Day-themed. Links in those offers can also infect your computer, as well with malware.  The rule of thumb should be to be cautious unless it's a company that you've purchased something from in the past.

And searches. scammers know you will log on and type into a search engine, like google, your great gift idea for your valentine. So they set up bogus websites selling counterfeit goods. Mainly to get your credit card information.

And lastly, is be cautious of what your friends send you over social media.  A lot of those Valentine's Day apps and messages often just link you to another page, sometimes they are called survey websites where they will just try to collect your personal information.
