Great backyard bird count tracks bird populations

Bird lovers in Pensacola are taking part in the Great Backyard Bird Count today.

The annual event takes place all across the world each year and helps track bird populations.
People from more than a hundred countries spend at least 15 minutes counting birds in their area and then they enter their information on a website.

"We can expect to get about 20 species that are water dependent and another 25 species  that are land dependent. So it's a good representation of the winter population of birds in February."
Last year, more than 36-hundred species of birds were recorded during the count.

Researchers use the data to study health patterns in birds.
