Senate resolution will change Santa Rosa County land ownership

SANTA ROSA COUNTY   --  The U.S. House passed a resolution that will change the ownership of *part of Santa Rosa Island.

The federal government gave Escambia County control over much of the island in 1947.

That agreement said Escambia County could never *sell the land only *lease it.
In the 1950's, Escambia started leasing Navarre Beach to Santa Rosa County.

The new resolution would require Escambia to turn over Navarre Beach to Santa Rosa County.

It also allows Escambia to deed land over to individuals, a key point in the move to charge property taxes to people with homes or businesses on the island.

The resolution still has to be approved by the senate and signed by the president before any changes take place.
