Washington State mudslide deaths rise to 25, 90 still unaccounted for
WASHINGTON STATE -- Search and recovery efforts continue on the scene of that deadly mudslide in Washington State.
The death toll now stands at 25.
That is expected to keep rising because 90 people are still unaccounted for.
Heavy equipment is being used to scoop up small loads of mud.
Then it is probed for signs that someone may be buried nearby.
Dayn Brunner calls it one of his toughest tasks.
"We got her she was found today"
Finding, and extracting - his sister's body.
"Honor and a privilege to be able to get her."
Summer Raffo was driving on State Route 530 - when this hillside collapsed.
Her car, crushed under all the debris.
Her brothers searched - for 5 days until crews combing the area found her.
They called the brothers - to bring her home.
"It was great sense of relief and knowing it was my son that extracted her from the vehicle and held her and cried for her, for the entire family gave me a big sense of relief.
There is little relief in Mac McPhersen's house.
His wife of 45 years - is now gone with all his cows his cattle, lost as well
He still remembers the moment the wall of mud came crashing in.
I kept digging and digging and digging with a stick, until I could see that light - and I shoved that sucker up there and started waving it back and forth. "
Rescuers saw that and used a chainsaw to get Mac out.
Crews haven't found any survivors since Saturday.
Search dogs and dozers, and a team of volunteers continue to comb through all the muck to look for those 90 still missing, knowing the grim reality - some may never come home.
"They are hurting very badly right now."
