TRACKING THE TROPICS

On the map below, the circle over the Gulf of Mexico is for an area of low pressure heading toward Texas.  Development is not expected.  Also, we're tracking Cristobal and a tropical wave over the Atlantic Ocean that may become another depression though chances are low.

Fort Walton Beach/ Mary Esther storm damage

FORT WALTON BEACH/MARY ESTHER  --  In Fort Walton Beach a lightning strike is blamed for starting fires at four homes.
This was on Ferretti Avenue around 11 am.

Neighbors say the home with the most damage had just been sold and the new owners haven't even moved in yet.

Lester Grout/Called 911:  "I saw a lightning bolt hit a transformer just across the street over here and it sent sparks all the way down the line, all over the place and a spark went back into that house across the street over there. I could see smoke coming out, so I called 911."

The same squall line knocked down several trees onto the Mary Esther Library.
Laura Hussey "Driving down Hollywood Boulevard toward the Mary Esther Library, you see all kinds of debris from trees, branches and leaves on the road. Coming up on the library, downed tree here.

Look at the roof, not one, not two, but three trees have fallen on that roof of the Mary Esther Library.

They say inside the sound was incredibly frightening. And then they had to start scrambling.

Ceiling tiles were falling, water was coming in and they tried to get all the expensive computer equipment covered and out of the way. no damage estimate but they say it is serious in there."
