Toyota settlement for 1.2 billion

Toyota is shelling out 1.2 billion dollars to settle a years-long criminal investigation.

At issue, how Toyota handled the sticky gas pedals and runaway vehicles, which were linked to five deaths and led to a recall of more than 10 million cars.

The Justice Department says the automaker put its brand ahead of its customers by launching a cover up to deceive consumers and the government.

The settlement means the Justice Department will defer prosecution for three years, provided Toyota continues to cooperate with federal investigators.
Other car companies should not repeat Toyota's mistake: A recall may damage a company's reputation, but deceiving your customers makes that damage far more lasting.

In a statement, Toyota says we have made fundamental changes to become a more responsive and customer-focused organization, and we are committed to continued improvements.
GM might face the similar charges.
