Fort Walton Beach tries to plan New Year's Eve celebration

FORT WALTON BEACH  --  Pensacola has the Pelican Drop, Destin has a ball drop over the Harbor.
Now another big New Year's Eve celebration could be coming to our area.
Laura Hussey "Downtown Fort Walton Beach is becoming more and more of a draw. This time of year it's the Friday night Artwalk, with tons of people and music. But come winter, could this place become the next New Year's Eve destination?"
Fireworks and bright lights to ring in the New Year.
They can be found, but not always close to home.
Jeryn Palenske/FWB "A bunch of us went over to Baytowne for their New Year's Eve, but most all of us live here in the Fort Walton area so something down here I think could be really fun and good"
Downtown can definitely draw a crowd.
Established events pack the Fort Walton Landing with fun-seekers.
Bobby Nabors/Boardroom Pub "We do July 4th, definitely. Memorial Day's a big weekend, Billy Bowlegs is big downtown. New Year's is a natural fit for people going out and having a good time"
The city recently approved a Downtown Entertainment District, with relaxed open container rules.
The city manager says it sets the stage for more and bigger events.
Michael Beedie/FWB City Manager "Destin's already been successful with it, Pensacola's been successful with it. So we're kind of modeling, we don't want to be them, but we want to model a successful entertainment district after that"
City staffers are researching what a New Year's Eve celebration would cost and how they'd put it together.
The big question will come if the council decides to move forward, what will Fort Walton Beach light up and drop at midnight?
A skull and crossbones is the newsroom favorite, but these military wives say pick something patriotic.

Laura Hussey "It's all sounding great, but you don't have to wait for winter to have fun downtown. Concerts in the Park start next month."
