HEALTH: Giving up shampoo

Conerns over chemicals and the environment have some women ditching their shampoo!

But is that a good idea?
Shampooing- you do it every day, every other day, maybe you go a week

Between suds - but after that? It gets kinda gnarly
And yet a growing number of women are laying off the lather forever.

Dr. Rosemarie Ingleton / Dermatologist    "A lot of people have gotten concerned about some of the ingredients in traditional shampoos - the preservatives, the parabens.

Whether it's the desire to avoid chemicals in shampoo, save money, or just have healthier hair-  the no-poo movement is gaining momentum

Dr. Rosemarie Ingleton / Dermatologist   When you don't shampoo your hair,  you do go through a phase where you do produce that extra oil and then it slows down, usually at around 30 days.

This woman who surprised the experts on the show the doctors has gone 5 years without shampoo .

"What you see here is the hair follicles - there's no redness, no kind of irritation"  I think it might be something I might even wanna try."

i do love a good shampoo- but my assignment: Go 7 days without washing and  see what happens.

Day one- washed this morning, but I'm a little worried. This is right around the time I usually get my hair done. These roots could start looking a little dark and oily.

Ok Day 2
I rinsed it with water this morning and blow dried it- i think it looks ok, but it feels kinda heavy and oily.

As the week goes on the hair gets heavier, the roots oilier. After a few runs then playing in the pool with the kids - I keep rinsing it and blow drying it and this is what it looks like on day 5.

It's  stringy and the roots feel like a waxy helmet. Plus it smells like mushrooms.
I enlist the help of my 6 year old to corroborate the mushroom odor

"What does my hair smell like?
Like yourself.
Not bad-?
No not bad.

But after 7 days of no poo what's the objective opinion.
Well I'll let you judge for yourself.  More health stories
