Volunteers celebrate Earth Day by cleaning up the waterfront

PENSACOLA  --  Today is Earth Day.
And in Downtown Pensacola volunteers marked the occasion by cleaning up the waterfront.

They picked up trash at Project Greenshores, along Bayfront Parkway.
Their goal went beyond just making the area look better.

Shawn Hamilton/Dept. of Environmental Protection: "The focus is to highlight what we need to be doing all the time, opportunity to come together as a community and think about what we can be doing all year long, not just this one day."

Donna Funck/Volunteer: "I think it's an important thing to teach kids to value our natural resources and how to take care of what we have here in Pensacola that's so beautiful."

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection organized the event and they had sixty volunteers, more than half from Gulf Power.

A spokesperson says they collected 39 bags of trash enough to fill two pick-up trucks.
