Vote on Red Snapper season expected today
Today the Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council Reef Fish Committee is expected to vote on the Red Snapper season limits in federal waters. And this year it could be even shorter.
That's because 21 commercial fisherman sued agencies including the National Marine Fisheries Service. The group says recreational fisherman have caught more than their quota in five of the last six years. The suit says agencies used faulty science, failing to monitor the quota correctly.
A judge agreed with the suit and said all future decisions about snapper must be made with a priority on preventing overages. But a shorter season would have a big impact on the area.
"All those people who scheduled their trip specifically to come to Florida and spend money to go target Red Snappers. They will have to make a decision of canceling their charter, going somewhere else on vacation," said Mike Eller.
The new regulations would only concern federal waters, as Florida governs its own state waters. Once again a meeting will be held today to vote on the season's limits in federal waters.
