Ice Flyers win Championship series

The Pensacola Ice Flyers have dominated the Southern Professional Hockey League for three months.  And they opened the championship series with a 9-1 pounding of Columbus, April 10th.
Another win, April 12th in Columbus, Georgia, would give the Flyers the championship.

But the Columbus Cottonmouths were embarrassed, Thursday.  And 2 seconds into the game, Alex Gallant picked a fight with the Flyers' Mitchell Good.
But, for the second straight game in this series, the Flyers struck quickly.

Steve Bergin found Brett Lutes for the first goal, just 2:18 into the game.
And the large group of Pensacola fans who made the trip were treated to another Lutes goal, just 5 minutes later, this time, on a pass from Joe Caveney.

Columbus made it 2-1, after one, then held the upper hand early in the second period.  But Ross Mackinnon was solid in goal, as always.

And Corey Banfield all but put the game away with two goals, 3 minutes apart, mid-way through the second period.
First, he tipped in a pass from Tyler Ambergey to make it 3-1.

Then, Steve Whitely found Banfield streaking through the snakes' defense.  Perfect pass.  Pretty move.  It was 4-1.
John Dunbar added another goal.  And the ice flyers won their second straight President's Cup.
Brett Lutes was the playoff MVP.

The flyers won the game, 5-1.  They won the series, two games to none.
Afterwards, our Dan Shugart gathered the Ice Flyers' thoughts on a most remarkable year.
