Pensacola hosts disaster preparedness day
PENSACOLA - BRACE along with Escambia County and the City of Pensacola teamed up to host a city-wide disaster preparedness day at Maritime Park.
The event highlighted what to do before, during and after a storm.
A strong storm can cause major damage and can strike with or without advanced warning. Ten years after Hurricane Ivan, Cheryl McIntosh still hasn't forgotten the destruction.
"I still have it here, and it was bad so I'm here" said Cheryl McIntosh, Pensacola.
Robert Payne doesn't want to be caught off guard either, especially after seeing how Northwest Florida dealt with record rain in April. He just moved to the area from Tennessee and isn't familiar with coastal storms like hurricanes.
"I've never been through a hurricane before so this here will definitely help" said Robert Payne, Pensacola.
"8700 families in our community have registered for assistance, from the flood so that gives you some idea how vulnerable we are as a community" said Greg Strater, BRACE.
Up to 40 vendors helped people with disaster kits. They also handed out helpful information on how to best prepare for when disaster strikes.
