National Memorial Day service

President Obama returned just after daybreak to Washington from a surprise visit to US troops in Afghanistan.

He then led Memorial Day ceremonies late morning at Arlington National Cemetery.
The President laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown.

And then, speaking to Veterans and their families, he paid tribute the Nation's war dead...
...the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their Country.

"In times of war, in times of peace, Americans have come here to pay
tribute not only to the loved ones who meant the world to them, but to all
our heroes, known and unknown."

And, to applause, President Obama promised that by the end of this year,
the war in Afghanistan would finally come to an end and most of the troops
there would be coming home.

The President is expected to fill in details of his post-2014 Afghanistan
plan during a commencement address Wednesday at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.
